Week 10
ANNOUNCE: I may be a few minutes late to class today. We are having class, please read below for what we will be covering. See you soon!
OWS - Continue to work on your stop motion "What It Does" Project while I come around and view progress & offer feedback. If you feel you are already at a stopping point on this project, until you receive feedback from me, begin working on ideas for your Marketing Spot (see description below) or making sure your blog is up-to-date, as you will be presenting it to the class next week.
Marketing Spot (Motion Graphics):
Phase 1:
If you do not already have a one-word name for your product or service, create one for this campaign. Final pass at logo/logotype.
Phase 2:
Brainstorming. Begin thinking in terms of connotation: the "character" of your product or service, the lifestyle it suggests, the suggestive instead of the literal. Find examples of marketing spots online that you feel are evocative, clever and/or inspirational for your marketing goals.
These spots should "show" instead of "tell" viewers about the product, how it provides a solution, or answers a need or want within a scenario. This can be through a character & lifestyle profile, an anthropomorphization of the product, or some other uncanny, revolutionary way that has "stickiness" i.e. grabs viewers' attention. Post your notes and research on your blogs.
Phase 3:
Create a simple storyboard, like you produced for your "What It Does" Project, but based on the brainstorming above. Include your product logo in beginning and/or ending frame sequence.
Phase 4:
Create a styleframe storyboard. This only needs to be 3-4 frames, but this will flesh out your simple storyboard, in that it provides a general look and feel (actors, setting, palette, lighting, overall mood).
Final Phase:
Using the animation and/or video editing application, or motion graphics editor of your choice create a 8-12 second spot. Your soundscape (audio branding) project should be incorporated into this spot. Editing your original soundscape to work with your visuals is perfectly acceptable, but please try to maintain something of what you described your soundscape evoking in your bullet point descriptions form Week 09.
Schedule Overview for the Remainder of the Semester:
Homework:
1) Prepare blogs for presentation in class next week. (Create a narrative for your blog and present a synthesis of what your blog represents. Presentations should be no longer than 8 minutes. How does your blog reflect your interests, your aesthetics, your pov and/or your thesis research? What have you gained through compiling & posting the various images, articles, clips, links etc...to your blog? FOR CLASS NEXT WEEK:
What the product/service does based on results from community site and a review of your original theme, the results of the color/texture mood board and soundscape.
What the product/service does based on results from community site and a review of your original theme, the results of the color/texture mood board and soundscape.
- POST on your blog for next week four short bullet point phrases describing what your product or service might do evolving from your original theme, color/texture mood boards, soundscape, and social network data results. The four bullet points should be:
- 1) What the color/texture mood board evokes
- 2) What the soundscape evokes
- 3) Restate (edit as needed) the theme
- 4) A synthesis of the most important feedback gathered from your social network
- CREATE a simple storyboard showing your proposed product of service "in action". (Your storyboard can be hand drawn or created in Photoshop or Illustrator). (No less than 6 frames, nor more than 16).
IN CLASS NEXT WEEK, I will meet with each of you to approve your bullet points and stop motion storyboard proposals. You will then, either in class or outside, make a stop motion video (5-10) seconds using a digital STILL camera and video editing application (Final Cut or Premiere) to show your product/service in action.
Your photos can be of yourself or of another person or of the device/application. You can composite or overlay found footage and/or drawn/hand-rendered footage with live photo footage. You will need about 50 photos for a 5 second video.
The purpose of this short video is to show how the proposed product/service might function. The stop motion video is “denotative” (what it does, its purpose) rather than “connotative” (its marketing message). The entire video is one scene.

Assigment #3 - Mixed Soundscape - Audio Branding
Media: Found and self-recorded sounds
Using sounds found on the internet and sounds you record, create a mixed “soundscape” – evoking (but not documenting or simulating) the service, product or organization which might be associated with the theme you derived from your quote.
Use your theme as a guide in choosing your sources.
Collect these sounds using the Internet and/or your own recording device:
Mix these sounds using Audacity, so they seamlessly make one appropriate mixed sound which helps evoke your short theme and coincidentally starts to suggest the service, product or organization which may evolve from that theme.
Also, keep in mind the results from the Color / Texture Mood Board and have that influence the sound source selections as well as the mix.
Total Project Length = 5-8 seconds.
Homework:
Finish Assigment #3 - Mixed Soundscape - Audio Branding Project.

Collect these sounds using the Internet and/or your own recording device:
- Two selections of music, one perhaps classical; one contemporary; good rule of thumb: no words & the simpler the better.
- One sound effect
- One Animal Sound
- One Mechanical Sound
- One Electronic Sound
